Feeding with Purpose: Why Soy-Free Nutrition Matters at Heirloom Feeds

Because knowing what goes into your animals matters just as much as knowing what comes out of your farm.
Around here, we believe good farming begins with good decisions. From the way we care for our animals to the ingredients we put in their feeders, every choice reflects our commitment to raising healthy livestock and producing food we can feel confident sharing with our families and communities.
At Heirloom Feeds, we feed with purpose. Our commitment to soy-free animal nutrition is rooted in more than ten years of research, development, and a belief that better food begins with better feed.
But what makes soy-free feed different, and why does it matter?
Understanding Soy and Its Role in Animal Nutrition
Soybean meal is commonly used in conventional livestock feed because it provides an economical, protein-rich ingredient. However, soy also contains naturally occurring compounds called isoflavones, including genistein and daidzein.
These compounds are classified as phytoestrogens because they can interact with estrogen receptors in the body.
Research has examined how soy isoflavones are absorbed and metabolized by animals, including whether certain compounds or metabolites can appear in animal-derived foods.
Some animal studies have also explored how exposure to soy isoflavones may influence reproductive development, hormonal activity, and other biological processes.
However, detecting soy-derived compounds in animal products does not establish that consuming those products disrupts human hormones. Effects observed in animal studies depend on factors such as dose, species, and duration of exposure.
For us, this research reinforces the importance of understanding feed ingredients and making informed nutritional decisions.
Why We Choose Soy-Free Feed
Our decision to develop soy-free formulas wasn't about following a trend. It was about creating an alternative for farmers who wanted more control over what their animals consumed.
We believe the ingredients in livestock feed deserve the same thoughtful consideration as the ingredients in the food we purchase for ourselves.
That's why our proprietary feed lines are formulated without soy while providing essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals to support balanced animal nutrition.
Whether you're raising backyard laying hens, pasture-raised pigs, beef cattle, or other livestock, our goal is to offer dependable nutrition without relying on soy-based ingredients.
It's not simply about what we leave out. It's about the nutritional quality and consistency we put in.
Understanding the Difference Between Soy-Free and Non-GMO
One of the most important parts of making informed feed decisions is understanding what different labels actually mean.
Soy-free and non-GMO are not interchangeable.
Soy-free means a feed is formulated without soy ingredients. Non-GMO refers to whether ingredients come from genetically modified organisms.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, animals consuming genetically modified crops do not pass intact GMO DNA into the meat, milk, or eggs they produce. Feed DNA is broken down during digestion, and available evidence supports the safety and nutritional comparability of foods from animals consuming approved GMO feeds.
Research reviewing livestock feeding studies has similarly found no evidence that approved genetically engineered feeds negatively affect the health or productivity of livestock.
It's also worth understanding that both GMO and non-GMO crops may be grown using crop protection products, although the specific products and practices can differ.
For Heirloom Feeds, the distinction is important.
Our commitment centers on soy-free ingredients, carefully developed formulations, and consistent nutrition—not misleading claims about GMO foods.
We believe farmers and consumers deserve clear information rather than unnecessary confusion.
Confidence for Farmers, Families, and Feed Dealers
Every farmer deserves to feel confident about the products they use, and every feed dealer deserves to understand the products they recommend.
When you choose Heirloom Feeds, you're choosing a company built by farmers who care deeply about animal nutrition and ingredient transparency.
Our soy-free formulas offer an intentional alternative for producers seeking to avoid soy while meeting their animals' nutritional requirements.
For families raising their own food, that means greater confidence in their feeding practices.
For dealers, it means offering customers a product backed by years of development and a clear nutritional philosophy.
And for our communities, it encourages meaningful conversations about where food comes from and how livestock are raised.
Better Feed Begins with Better Choices
At Heirloom Feeds, we believe that healthy farming is built on knowledge, transparency, and purposeful decisions.
We don't believe every conventional feed is harmful. We simply believe farmers should have access to thoughtfully formulated alternatives that align with their goals and values.
From our farm to yours, we're proud to continue building a feed line centered on quality, consistency, and care.
